SETPOINT HISTORY

Setpoint is the leader in lean automation equipment for manufacturing companies who need to assemble, test, or inspect their products.  Since 1992 when Joe Cornwell and Joe VanDenBerghe started the company Setpoint has focused on lean production equipment for manufacturing companies using the Toyota Production System methodology.

Setpoint’s founders, Joe Cornwell and Joe VanDenBerghe met while working for another Utah-based manufacturing firm.  They became good friends and met twice each week at the local library for about a year to discuss their plans and dreams of someday owning and running their own business.  Joe and Joe made those dreams a reality when they founded Setpoint.

"The Joe's" were frustrated at their former company because felt that they never knew if a project was on budget or not until the end of the project.  They felt like they never knew what was going on.  When they started Setpoint they decided they were going to open the books and share the numbers with their employees and let them know what was going on with those numbers.

They brought Joe Knight into the company as the finance guy to help them with their open book finances.  He helped the Joe's to develop the current white board where all projects are accounted for.  Each Monday these numbers are reviewed with all of the employees so we can make adjustments early on to keep the project on budget.

Setpoint, has seen significant growth since it was founded in 1992, as is evident by its recognition in the 1999 issue of Inc Magazine's 500 fastest growing companies in America. Additionally, Setpoint has been included in Utah's top 100 fastest growing privately held companies. In September 2001 Setpoint was featured in an article of Inc Magazine, which showcased innovative US companies and Setpoint's unique open book management style.

In 2007 Joe Cornwell & Joe VanDenBerghe decided to focus more on building roller coasters rather than on the industrial automation business.  Setpoint Systems management team led by CEO Brad Angus completed a partial buyout of the controlling interest of the company from the Joe's.  This has allowed the Joe's to focus on Setpoint Inc., building roller coasters and continuing to have fun.

Throughout the years Setpoint has helped fund other companies to get them up and running.

LeanWerks

LeanWerks

By 2003 the owners of Setpoint were machining parts for the automated machinery that they were building.  They decided that this was a big enough business that it could run on its own, thus LeanWerks was founded.

From reverse engineering and clean sheet design to solid models and blueprints, LeanWerks offers comprehensive services for creating premium parts and assemblies.

LeanWerks has streamlined a unique ‘art to part’ method of executing tough machining projects to excel in situations that are time and quality critical. The company was recognized with a Utah Emerging Elite Award in the Utah 100 Awards sponsored by Mountain West Capital Network in 2005.

AutoPack

In 2006, Setpoint continued to grow by merging with a local packaging company.  AutoPack manufactures product feeding and packaging equipment for the nutritional and personal care industries.  "Coming together just made sense," said Setpoint Companies President Joe Cornwell. "We see this as a natural extension of our business."  AutoPack provided automated vitamin packaging systems and lip balm production equipment.  In 2007 AutoPack again became independent with Setpoint retaining the rights to manufacture and improve on the AutoPack packaging systems.
