THE CHALLENGE
Setpoint was contacted by a customer needing a non destructive test and inspection on a high volume assembly. The customer wanted to automate the process, while providing a fast cycle time and keeping with the lean philosophy already in place at their facility.
PRODUCTIVITY DELIVERED
Setpoint’s automation expertise coupled with robust planning, definition, and execution produced a non destructive automated part test and inspection machine that achieved the customer’s objectives. Setpoint’s custom machine delivered the following results:
- Combined process of two machines into one machine, reducing line floor space by 54%
- Reduced scrap rate by 84%
- Decreased labor minutes per unit by 50%
- Increased throughput by 33%
SUMMARY
As the demand for the customer’s product was increasing, the need for a robust solution that would provide a non destructive test and inspection on an assembly became increasingly important. The customer needed to reduce the labor minutes per unit as well as the floor space required for these tests.
Setpoint designed and built a machine using Real Time Radiography that automated the part on and off load which reduced the labor minutes per unit. The in line x-ray inspection and testing process provides a non destructive inspection process that verifies if the part is assembled correctly. A non destructive test is conducted simultaneously to provide an electrical check on each assembly. The film-less x-ray images and related data are archived to DVD’s or a network drive for storage and review as needed. The resulting system provided a compact footprint for easy integration into any new or existing process.
